Twenty-three years ago, Morningside Reformed Church in Sioux City called a new pastor to lead their congregation. Though it was a faithful church, it wasn’t seeing people come to Christ—one leader even admitted, “we haven’t had an adult baptism in years.”
Under new leadership, the elders embraced a renewed vision: to seek those who don’t know Jesus, grow those who do, and send those who will. They declared that “lost people matter to God, so they must also matter to this church.” That vision became the driving force behind every decision, even through seasons of challenge and decline.
Over time, transformation took root. Lives were changed, faith stories multiplied, and the church reimagined its mission—eventually becoming Sunnybrook Community Church. Inspired by Luke 15, the church committed to reaching people one life at a time through a simple three-step approach:
1. Build relationships with unchurched people
2. Share a verbal witness about Jesus
3. Invite them to church
Today, the answer to the question, “If Sunnybrook ceased to exist, would anyone notice?” is a resounding yes. Thousands of lives have been impacted through this mission—and God continues to use it to reach the one.
